EXPLORE

When something feels too much to handle,
you may find yourself going blank, becoming very quiet or
struggling to think, speak or act.
This can be a stress response.
Why Does This Happen?
When your brain senses threat or intense pressure, your body prepares to protect you.
Sometimes that means taking action. At other times, you may freeze or shut down.
You might notice that you:
- Cannot find the words to respond
- Struggle to think clearly
- Feel disconnected or numb
- Become unusually quiet
- Find it difficult to make decisions or take action
This can happen during conflict, intense stress or situations that remind us of difficult past experiences.
Why Can’t I Just Snap Out of It?
A freeze response is not simply a matter of choosing to respond differently.
Understanding what triggers the response and what happens when you feel overwhelmed can be an important first step towards responding differently.
When the Response Keeps Getting in the Way
If freezing or shutting down is affecting your daily life, relationships or ability to function, professional support may help.
